SKF SAF 22517/C3 Split Pillow Block Housing & Insert Assembly, Includes SAF 517 Cast-Iron Split Housing + 22217 CCKJ/C3W33 Spherical Roller Bearing (Tapered Bore) + SNW 17X2-15/16 Adapter Sleeve for 2-15/16″ Shaft, Lubrication Groove W33, C3 Clearance
Condition: Brand New in box (box may show shelf/storage wear). Factory-matched housing, bearing, and adapter sleeve; seals/auxiliary hardware only if pictured or noted.
This is a complete split pillow block set engineered to carry heavy radial loads and moderate axial loads on a 2-15/16 inch shaft. In simple terms, a pillow block is a “ready-to-bolt” bearing support: you bolt the SAF 517 housing to your frame or base, slide the SNW 17X2-15/16 adapter and 22217 CCKJ/C3W33 spherical roller bearing onto the shaft, tighten the adapter to lock the bearing, and clamp the split cap. The spherical roller bearing self-aligns to handle shaft misalignment and vibration; the W33 lubrication groove/holes allow re-lube while in service; C3 internal clearance is ideal for higher running temperatures and press fits.
What’s Included (Matched Set)
- SKF SAF 517 split cast-iron housing (two-bolt, heavy duty)
- SKF 22217 CCKJ/C3W33 spherical roller bearing insert
- Design: CC internal geometry, K tapered bore (1:12), J pressed steel cage, C3 internal clearance, W33 lubrication groove & holes
- Bearing dimensions: d (tapered bore) 85 mm; D 150 mm; B 36 mm (fits shaft via included adapter)
- SKF SNW 17X2-15/16 adapter sleeve set (for mounting 22217K on 2-15/16″ diameter shaft), with locknut/lockwasher
Seals/End covers: SAF housings accept multiple seal types (felt LER, triple-ring Taconite, etc.). Include only if shown/mentioned; otherwise select seals to suit your environment.
Key Features
- Complete, drop-in assembly: Housing + bearing + adapter pre-matched for 2-15/16″ shafts.
- Self-aligning spherical roller bearing: Tolerates misalignment from frame deflection or shaft bending.
- High load capacity: Two rows of rollers for heavy radial loads and shock.
- C3 clearance: Extra internal clearance supports thermal expansion and tight fits.
- W33 re-lubrication: Groove and holes in the outer ring simplify preventive maintenance.
- Split housing (SAF 517): Cap lifts off for fast inspection and bearing replacement—minimal shaft disassembly.
- Adapter-mounted (SNW): Secure, concentric grip on the shaft; easy to set radial internal clearance by feeler gauge.
Where It’s Used / Typical Machines
This style of pillow block is common anywhere a large shaft needs long-life, serviceable support:
- Bulk material handling: belt conveyors, head/tail pulleys, take-ups, bucket elevators
- Mining & aggregates: crushers, screens, feeders
- Pulp & paper / wood processing: rolls, chippers, hogs, debarkers
- Industrial HVAC & process fans: large blowers and air handlers
- Power & water: cooling-tower drives, clarifier/thickener rake arms
- General industry: large gearboxes, mixers, pumps, rotary kilns/drums
How it’s used:
Bolt the housing base to a rigid surface, slide the adapter sleeve onto the shaft, place the bearing over the sleeve, tighten the locknut to draw the bearing up the taper (this locks it to the shaft), check clearance, then install the housing cap. Grease through the zerk/ports (thanks to W33), and you’re running.
Basic Specifications (assembly)
- Shaft size (with SNW): 2-15/16 in
- Bearing series: 22217 CCKJ/C3W33 (tapered bore 85 mm, D 150 mm, B 36 mm)
- Housing series: SAF 517 (two-bolt pedestal, cast iron)
- Bore seat (housing): for 22217K insert + SNW sleeve
- Lubrication: Grease re-lubrication via housing/outer-ring ports (W33)
- Interchangeable seals: Felt, labyrinth, or taconite styles (select for environment)
Cross-Referenced / Interchange (verify details for your application)
- Timken/Dodge: SAF-517 housing equivalents; Dodge SAF-517 (uses 22217K + adapter for 2-15/16″)
- SKF alternatives: SNL/SNH 517 housings (different footprint), SKF 22217 EK/W33 (bearing with different cage/geometry), H 317 metric adapter sleeve (for metric shafts)
- Adapter sleeve analogs: SNW 17X- series in other inch sizes; H 2317 for straight metric shafts
(Always confirm bolt centers, base dimensions, and shaft fit when substituting.)
Comparable Products
- FAG/INA, NTN, NSK, and Dodge split pillow block assemblies for 2-15/16″ shafts using 22217K-class spherical roller bearings
- Solid-base plummer blocks (non-split) when teardown frequency is low and footprint permits
Part of Larger Systems / Installation Notes
- Sealing & environment: Choose seals to match dust/water levels—labyrinth or taconite for abrasive/wet service.
- Mounting: Align bases, use full-foot support, torque foundation bolts, and shim to avoid housing distortion.
- Setting clearance: With adapter mount, set the bearing’s internal clearance reduction per SKF chart (feeler-gauge method).
- Lubrication: Fill to recommended percentage; don’t over-grease high-speed fan positions.
- Thermal growth: C3 clearance helps; use one fixed (locating) and one floating (expansion) unit on long shafts.
